Summary

From TJ Klune, USA Today bestselling author of The House in the Cerulean Sea, comes Under the Whispering Door, a new contemporary fantasy about a ghost who refuses to cross over and the ferryman he falls in love with。

When a reaper comes to collect Wallace Price from his own funeral, Wallace suspects he really might be dead。

Instead of leading him directly to the afterlife, the reaper takes him to a small village。 On the outskirts, off the path through the woods, tucked between mountains, is a particular tea shop, run by a man named Hugo。 Hugo is the tea shop's owner to locals and the ferryman to souls who need to cross over。

But Wallace isn’t ready to abandon the life he barely lived。 With Hugo’s help he finally starts to learn about all the things he missed in life。

When the Manager, a curious and powerful being, arrives at the tea shop and gives Wallace one week to cross over, Wallace sets about living a lifetime in seven days。

By turns heartwarming and heartbreaking, this absorbing tale of grief and hope is told with TJ Klune's signature warmth, humor, and extraordinary empathy。

I don't think I have any emotions left- this book destroyed every single one of them, and left me a sobbing mess!No matter what I say in this review, I'll never be able to do it justice, so I'll just say this- Under the Whispering Door is a soft, beautiful, slow, sweet, tragic, heartbreaking, hilarious, and hopeful story that I think everyone should read at some point in their life。 I cannot recommend this highly enough, however, I will just leave the authors note below, as this won't be a book I don't think I have any emotions left- this book destroyed every single one of them, and left me a sobbing mess!No matter what I say in this review, I'll never be able to do it justice, so I'll just say this- Under the Whispering Door is a soft, beautiful, slow, sweet, tragic, heartbreaking, hilarious, and hopeful story that I think everyone should read at some point in their life。 I cannot recommend this highly enough, however, I will just leave the authors note below, as this won't be a book anyone could pick up and any point, without a little forewarning-"This story explores life and love as well as loss and grief。 There are discussions of death in different forms- quiet, unexpected, and death by suicide。 Please read with care。" 。。。more

*3。5 stars*ok。 so。 is this book just the house in the cerulean sea but with ghosts instead of children? pretty much。 did i still cry my eyes out multiple times? the tear stain on my pillow at 4 am says yes。 under the whispering door certainly has a lot of heart and a lot of humor。 the plot was maybe lacking a bit and the messaging was very on the nose but i kind of expected that and still enjoyed the story and the interactions between the characters。 if you want a quick read that will give you a *3。5 stars*ok。 so。 is this book just the house in the cerulean sea but with ghosts instead of children? pretty much。 did i still cry my eyes out multiple times? the tear stain on my pillow at 4 am says yes。 under the whispering door certainly has a lot of heart and a lot of humor。 the plot was maybe lacking a bit and the messaging was very on the nose but i kind of expected that and still enjoyed the story and the interactions between the characters。 if you want a quick read that will give you an existential crisis but also warm your heart, this book will do the trick。 。。。more

This is the first book I have read by TJ Klune and it won't be the last。 Under the Whispering Door is a poignant tale about life and death and the consequences of choices we make along the way。 Filled with memorable characters, a cozy little tea shop, and a slow-burn romance, the novel has proven itself to be a poignant tale that faces death and the stages of grieving head on。 Are we creatures who are capable of change? Another 5 star read from TJ! This book started off a little slow for me。 It took me a good hundred pages to really become invested。 I definitely had high expectations and when they weren't immediately met I was a little disappointed but OMG when this book hooked me it did not let go! I loved this book。 The author somehow takes a very heavy subject and makes it light-hearted without losing any depth or emotional pull。 This is one of my favorite reads of 2021。

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫🪦It takes dying for Wallace to truly learn what it means to live。 👍🏼Klune has a way with words。 I absolutely adore the way he writes dialogue。 He gets me crying and laughing all throughout。 👎🏼A minor complaint really but I prefer to see a romance unfold as opposed to being told it did。 ✅Well written and thought provoking。 This book is heavy and trigger warnings abound but Klune has really mastered the art of writing heavy topics in a unique way that somehow has both levity and great dep ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫🪦It takes dying for Wallace to truly learn what it means to live。 👍🏼Klune has a way with words。 I absolutely adore the way he writes dialogue。 He gets me crying and laughing all throughout。 👎🏼A minor complaint really but I prefer to see a romance unfold as opposed to being told it did。 ✅Well written and thought provoking。 This book is heavy and trigger warnings abound but Klune has really mastered the art of writing heavy topics in a unique way that somehow has both levity and great depth。 I’m still thinking about this one and probably will be for a while。 A great discussable book! I adored this book。 It is everything I wanted it to be and hoped it would be。 I had this preordered ages ago because of how much I loved HITCC, which snuck up on me and quickly became my go-to comfort read。 This book is less。。。 lighthearted。 Given that the book mostly occurs in the afterlife, one would expect that。 But the "found family" trope is still present and this IS still a feel-good book。 I recommend it。 Read it while drinking some of your favorite tea。 I adored this book。 It is everything I wanted it to be and hoped it would be。 I had this preordered ages ago because of how much I loved HITCC, which snuck up on me and quickly became my go-to comfort read。 This book is less。。。 lighthearted。 Given that the book mostly occurs in the afterlife, one would expect that。 But the "found family" trope is still present and this IS still a feel-good book。 I recommend it。 Read it while drinking some of your favorite tea。 。。。more

TJ Klune has done it again。 The heart, understanding, and acceptance in his writing so perfectly mirrors the loveable, quirky, ever-growing characters that accompany us on the journey between life and death。 This book can be a comfort to those struggling with the unknown of what comes after this life - especially those going through hardship。 Maybe this life is only the beginning of our journey and maybe there is even more wonderment and love waiting for us beyond the whispering door。 You will f TJ Klune has done it again。 The heart, understanding, and acceptance in his writing so perfectly mirrors the loveable, quirky, ever-growing characters that accompany us on the journey between life and death。 This book can be a comfort to those struggling with the unknown of what comes after this life - especially those going through hardship。 Maybe this life is only the beginning of our journey and maybe there is even more wonderment and love waiting for us beyond the whispering door。 You will feel challenged to be better, do better, and love harder and more often after reading this book。 Thanks, TJ Klune for another gem and for reminding us of the simple, complex, and unknown beauty in this world and beyond。 。。。more

Listen, ya'll。 There are trigger warnings at the front of this book。 Listen to them, and listen to me。 If you have a weird relationship with death or are grieving someone, I don't know if I'd read this。 However, I would recommend to read it at some point in your life, when you need clarity around the grieving process or feel like you are ready to read a book about death。 I'm not saying you won't cry, but you probably won't sob like a baby at the end like I did because my mom died two months ago。 Listen, ya'll。 There are trigger warnings at the front of this book。 Listen to them, and listen to me。 If you have a weird relationship with death or are grieving someone, I don't know if I'd read this。 However, I would recommend to read it at some point in your life, when you need clarity around the grieving process or feel like you are ready to read a book about death。 I'm not saying you won't cry, but you probably won't sob like a baby at the end like I did because my mom died two months ago。Just saying。 5 stars。 Would recommend。 。。。more

I don't even know how to form words that could describe just how amazing this book is。 Powerful doesn't even begin to cover it。 This book is about death - which we all know is a harsh subject。 I promise you that this book is meant for you。 It allows you to see death in a way that isn't so final and terrifying。 I laughed, I sobbed, I cheered。。。just ALL of the emotions。 This book left me feeling so much lighter。 I feel like a weight was taken off my shoulders and I can breathe again。 IT'S THAT MOV I don't even know how to form words that could describe just how amazing this book is。 Powerful doesn't even begin to cover it。 This book is about death - which we all know is a harsh subject。 I promise you that this book is meant for you。 It allows you to see death in a way that isn't so final and terrifying。 I laughed, I sobbed, I cheered。。。just ALL of the emotions。 This book left me feeling so much lighter。 I feel like a weight was taken off my shoulders and I can breathe again。 IT'S THAT MOVING。 TJ Klune is the absolute best author out there。 I will forever read everything he writes。 No one does it quite like he does。 He has such a unique writing style, an undeniable ability to make you laugh, and has a dash of sadist in him that will bring on the tears guaranteed in every story。 Do yourself a favor and read this one。 You won't regret it。 If you like audiobooks I highly recommend that route。 。。。more
